NEBBIA a magical fog
A cross between acrobatic theatre, performance and the modern circus, “Nebbia, a Magical Fog” combines theatre, rhythm, acrobatic ability, circus acts and poetry. The grand debut of the Cirque Éloize at the Teatro Arcimboldi

There is the Circus, there are clowns, it certainly makes us laugh and perhaps even cry. Even Shakespeare is there, or at least his spirit, and his games of theatre within theatre, with their clown actors. There are stories from the neighbourhood of Ferrara where the director was born; there is suspended time, comical in the style of Chagall, tragic and surreal in the style of Fellini in Amarcord.
In this new creation, the third part of a trilogy which began with Nomade (Nomad), the fog becomes the heart of the show: a fog in which everything becomes possible, and where reality becomes a dream. Daniele Finzi Pasca, author and director of the show, notes: “In Nomade we look upwards to discover that, at night, the sky is infinite, while in Rain a shower of nostalgic freedom pours down on us; now, in Nebbia, the sky falls like a cloak to cover our shoulders and protect our dreams. There are fogs which are thick and deep like a state of drunkenness; we lose all points of reference, all that remains are lampposts, pale references, islands of light. The horizon dissolves and it seems that the sea is just two paces away.
On the Padana Plain the fog is an adventure. Ever since childhood, when we went to visit our grandparents, we knew that the whole road, the houses opposite the living room balcony and the whole world could disappear before nightfall. The sky sank low and every sound was like a little hallucination. My school friend Paolo had a shell where you could hear the noise of the sea inside. My grandmother’s house had a windowsill where you could imagine the transatlantic ships passing when it was foggy.
You don’t get lost in the fog, there are only strange encounters and there are no mirages, no hallucinations. In the fog reality becomes a dream, or perhaps it doesn’t change at all, it just seems so. Everything becomes possible; even if you have no imagination, everything becomes possible. On my grandmother’s balcony I thought I glimpsed camels and deserts, mermaids, my uncle returning from the war and then a circus, and I even saw myself as a grown-up, whizzing past in a red car.
Nebbia, a Magical Fog” is the new and latest and creation born from the collaboration between Teatro Sunil of Lugano and the Canadian Cirque Éloize. “A cross between acrobatic theatre, performance and the modern circus, Nebbia” - says Finzi Pasca “combines theatre, rhythm, acrobatic ability, circus acts and poetry. There are also some of those strange risks which reappear: a little like the Chagall which is in me. Acrobatics is the most ancient profound language of humanity of the circus, in a sense it is the response to the angelismo of the gods and it touches each one of us, letting us dream. We have to fly high, no-one can stop us!
