For more than a century, the Society for the Fine Arts and Permanent Exhibition, or “La Permanente”, as it is now commonly called in Milan, autonomously carries out its task of cultural promotion, not only with regard to Milan, but also nationally and internationally. The society generally works with themed exhibitions and exhibitions by its member artists, and major contributors to cultural and artistic history, not only Milanese, but also national, have been part of this society – it is suffice to mention names such as F.Hayez, T.Cremona, D.Ranzoni, G.Previati, M.Bianchi, G.Pellizza da Volpedo, A.Morbelli, G.Induno, L.Vela, F.T.Marinetti, U.Boccioni, M.Sironi, A.Funi, C.Carrà, A.Rossi and T.Longaretti who have created their works over the course of history. Within the sphere of the event «La bella estate di Milano» (“the wonderful Milanese summer”) and following the wishes of the new board of directors, presided over by Guido Podestà, the Permanent gallery will remain open this August, and the citizens of Milan and the tourists who have chosen to remain in the city will be offered a selection of forty works chosen from the gallery’s own collection, consisting of approximately 200 pieces including paintings, sculpture and graphic arts by Italian artists, a collection which provides an important testimony to the changes in the critical-aesthetic taste of the last century. Among others, it includes works by Bucci, Carrà, Casorati, Cassinari, Chighine, De Grada, Fontana, Marussig, Milani, Sironi, Tadini and Treccani, as well as artists from more recent generations. The large collection was formed beginning with the foundation of the society with the works which had received awards at the exhibition events (Triennials from 1891 to 1906, Biennials of the City of Milan from 1908 to 1927 and successively from 1953 to 1993), to which have been added acquisitions and donations by artists and collectors (the latest include paintings by Banchieri, Dangelo, Forgioli, Rosai and Turcato). Visitors can see the portraits of Ambrogio Alciati, Emilio Gola and Guido Tallone, which belong to the oldest group of paintings, while Liberty decorator Galileo Chini’s work «Cineserie con frutta», dating back to 1914, will be on display. Bucci, Carrà, Sironi and Marussig document the period of the «return to order»; the exhibition then continues in chronological order with works by Fausto Pirandello, Ottone Rosai, Bruno Cassinari, Pietro Cascella and Aldo Carpi. On display is also the portrait in bronze of Lucio Fontana created by Messina in 1946, as well as two ceramic plates, created by Fontana himself in 1954. Several works from the Milanese movement of Existential Realism by Franco Francese, Giuseppe Guerreschi and Bepi Romagnoni are on display, as well as the grey and unmistakeable «Roofs of Milan» by Giuseppe Banchieri. The large installation «Tribute to Latin America», created in 1971 by Alik Cavaliere and Emilio Scanavino, is the most recent masterpiece in the exhibition.
