TWO WORLDS. Jazz and Classical music together at the Philodramatic Theatre of Milan
|
 |
What is a real privilege of spending a Sunday morning in the city? A seat at the Philodramatic Theatre, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., to attend the Sunday Concerts. The concert series, which under the artistic direction of Roberto Porroni has now reached its 18th edition, has become a point of reference for Milan’s cultural life, with ever increasing attendance by the public and special attention from the mass media. A friendly atmosphere, a post concert aperitif with the artists in the foyer of the Theatre and a schedule of programs and ensembles that present some very special repertoires, while maintaining the characteristics of “themed concerts”; a formula that has been met with vivacious satisfaction on the part of both the public and the critics. TWO WORLDS was the name of the concert held on Sunday, April 15th. Two musical worlds, classical and jazz, came together to gave life to a new musical experience with a tribute to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Joaquin Barroso, Pat Metheny, Django Reinhardt and Duke Ellington. The players: Franco Cerri on jazz guitar, Roberto Porroni on classical guitar, Marco Ricci on double bass and Tommaso Bradascio on percussion. The concert was a genuine success. FRANCO CERRI taught himself to play both the guitar and the double bass, later concentrating only on the first. He has always stood out for his refined and complex reharmonization work of the most classical themes from a jazz repertoire (the standards), often using reinterpretations that are surprising for their freshness and originality. At one time Franco Cerri was one of the most important innovators on the Italian jazz scene and is still today a high profile star. He has directed the jazz section of the Civic School of Music of Milan for the past two years, in collaboration with Enrico Intra. ROBERTO PORRONI is one of the most well-known representatives of the concert guitar. A winner of a number of youth concerts, he trained with Julian Bream and John Williams and in 1978 he was personally invited to Spain by Andrés Segovia, beginning a brilliant international career that led him to appearances at a variety of major concert halls (the Musikverein in Vienna, La Scala in Milan, Fairfield Hall in London, the Philharmonic in St. Petersburg, the World Bank Auditorium in Washington, the Gewandhaus in Liepzig, the Palacio de Queluz in Lisbon, the Ateneo in Madrid, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, Oji Hall in Tokyo, Melba Hall in Melbourne and the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires). MARCO RICCI is one of the most popular new generation jazz musicians and a very talented pianist, double bassist and electric drum player; he has played at a number of major jazz festivals, collaborating with some of the most prestigious musicians of our time, including Santo Palumbo, Renato Sellani, Franco Cerri, Billy Coham, Bob Mover, Lee Kanitz and Don Friedman. TOMMASO BRADASCIO, a drummer and percussionist, focuses almost all of his concert activity on the drums, touching upon various styles, including pop, jazz, classical and modern music. In the field of jazz, he has worked with internationally renowned musicians such as Don Friedman, Jeff Fuller, Dave Liebman, Guido Manusardi, Dado Maroni and Bruno De Filippi.
