 Umberto Giordano

January 2, 5

For the 50th Anniversary of the death of Victor de Sabata
Teatro alla Scala Chorus, Ballet Company and Orchestra
New Teatro alla Scala Production
Running Time: 2 hours 35 minutes intermission included

ABOUT  THE PERFORMANCE
Giordano’s masterpiece, Andrea Chénier – which made its début at La Scala in 1896 – has not graced the theatre’s stage since 1985, when Riccardo Chailly starred on the podium, but this year, on December 7th, the Musical Director will once again take the lead, continuing his historic revival of the vast Italian repertoire. On this prestigious occasion, he joins forces for the first time with Mario Martone, an expert director specialized in the creation of historical frescoes for the stage and screen, who – in collaboration with Margherita Palli – directed last year another work by Giordano, La cena delle beffe, inaugurating the rediscovery of Verismo at La Scala. In the lead role, Yusif Eyvazov debuts alongside Anna Netrebko, at her third season opening production, and Luca Salsi.

Fryderyk Chopin

January 3, 4, 10, 13

Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company and Orchestra
New production
Royal Theatre production, Copenhagen
Running Time: 2 hours 50 minutes intermissions included

ABOUT  THE PERFORMANCE
Svetlana Zakharova and Roberto Bolle are the protagonists of a milestone of John Neumeier’s choreographic work, a great example of his predilection for narrative ballet and of his contemporary concept of dramatic ballet. 2018 is the 40th anniversary of the production for the Stuttgart Ballet and the 170th anniversary of the publication of Alexandre Dumas’ novel. Neumeier has chosen to get inspiration from the novel, rather than from its stage adaptation by the same author, and he leads to the dramatic climax, on Chopin’s moving notes, through wonderful pas de deux, great ensemble scenes, and important solos.

GOLDBERG-VARIATIONEN
Johann Sebastian Bach

January 25, 27, 30

Running Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company
New Teatro alla Scala Production

ABOUT  THE PERFORMANCE
“Every time I listen to Bach, I feel my heart leap”: that is how Heinz Spoerli presented Cello Suites, inaugurating the production of ballets on chamber music at La Scala in 2015. This second ballet production was created in 1993 and is now staged at La Scala for the first time. Alexey Botvinov’s piano, performing the mathematical and symmetrical schemes of Bach's Goldberg Variations, interacts with the movement of the solos, pas de deux and ensemble scenes. For Spoerli, the Goldberg Variations are similar to life: bonds are created, couples get together and are later separated, in perpetual movement.

Music / Johann Sebastian Bach
Choreography / Heinz Spoerli
Piano / Alexey Botvinov
Sets and costumes / Keso Dekker
Lights / Martin Gebhardt
