Toulouse Lautrec. The fleeting world

From 17th October 2017 to 18th February 2018, Palazzo Reale in Milan will celebrate Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) with an extensive monographic exhibition highlighting the artist’s prolific journey and the traits of extraordinary modernity in his works.
The exhibition project is split into themes and will invite the visitor to appreciate the fascination and artistic importance of the bohemian painter who, without adhering to any school, knew instinctively how to create a new and provocative realism, an extreme synthesis of form, colour and movement.
The author's stylistic evolution, of aristocratic origins but influenced by Paris's decadent life of the ‘urban-underclass’, will be outlined in all its phases, from painting to graphic design, with particular reference to Toulouse-Lautrec’s profound knowledge of Japanese prints and his passion for photography.
Over 250 of Toulouse-Lautrec’s works, featuring 35 paintings, along with lithographs, etchings and the complete series of 22 posters made by the 'cursed' artist on loan from the Toulouse-Lautrec Musée of Albi and important museums and international collections such as the Tate Modern in London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Puškin Museum in Moscow, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the MASP (Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo), and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris and from several historical private collections.

The exhibition, curated by Danièle Devynck (director of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi) and Claudia Zevi, is promoted and produced by the Municipality of Milan-Department of Culture, Palazzo Reale, Giunti Arte Mostre Musei and Electa, together with the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec de Albi and the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art (INHA) in Paris.
 

 





Inside Caravaggio

“Dentro Caravaggio” at Palazzo Reale in Milan from 29.09.2017 to 28.1.2018 presents an unexplored new perspective of the years of the artist’s extraordinary production, under the light of a some new documents and more recent researches.
Once again Milan pays homage to the genius artist showing eighteen of the master's works of art together for the first time ever. Deemed as unique, this retrospective not only presents the public with works on loan from other major Italian museums, and from equally important foreign museums, but for the first time ever Caravaggio's canvases will be flanked by their respective radiographic images thanks to the innovative use of multimedia equipment, enabling the audience to follow and discover the artist's journey from his initial thoughts to the final achievement.
Through diagnostic methods such as reflectographs and x-rays, which penetrate to a different extent under the pictorial surface, it is possible to analyse Caravaggio’s creative process, his idiosyncratic painting technique, his changes of heart, modifications and adjustments in composition.
Amongst the museums and collections in Italy participating in the exhibition are: Galleria degli Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti and Fondazione Longhi, Florence; Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Musei Capitolini, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica-Palazzo Corsini, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica-Palazzo Barberini, Rome; Museo Civico, Cremona; Banca Popolare di Vicenza; Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and Gallerie d’Italia Palazzo Zevallos, Naples.

Teatro alla Scala costumes from the thirties to today

Twenty-four extraordinary stage costumes have been carefully chosen from the large archive of stage costumes conserved in the Teatro alla Scala and restored especially for the occasion. They will be exhibited in the sale degli Arazzi at Palazzo Reale.
The exhibition and the restoration of these precious garments is promoted by the Association Amici della Scala, which celebrates 40 years of activity, underpinning its commitment to promote La Scala’s historic heritage.
In four thematic sections the exhibition celebrates the history and identity of the Theatre from the 1930s to the present day.

Every costume refers to the creation of legendary roles and performances directed by iconic figures such as Visconti, Strehler, Ronconi, Wilson, Carsen and many others; the garments were worn by super divas such as Callas, Tebaldi, Fracci and Nureyev. Curated by Anusc Castiglioni, Luca Scarzella and Massimo Zanelli, the setting evokes a theatrical stage that extends over four rooms with a runway show of costumes illuminated as if they were part of the scene set against a background depicting great performers, in an elegant overlay of images.

The restoration and valorisation of most of the costumes exhibited were entrusted to the esteemed ‘Atelier Brancato’.

The Museo del Novecento (Museum of the Twentieth Century) in Palazzo dell'Arengario, is a public venue for the display of Milan's collection of Twentieth-Century Art. The museum is intended to be an important cultural institute for researching, understanding and investigating the artistic phenomena, the forms and the language of Twentieth-Century Art. In the 8,200 square metres of exhibition hall will be on display works by Picasso, Braque, Klee, Modigliani, Fontana, Marinetti, De Chirico, Morandi, Burri, and other famous twentieth century artists ranging from the beginning of the century to the 1960s. The paintings and statues will be displayed in chronological order and many have been donated from private collections.

Supper at Emmaus

Brera Masterpiece

 
 



Caravaggio painted the Supper at Emmaus between 1605 and 1606, in other words between the end of his time in Rome and his final flight from the city after being found guilty of murder. He managed to sell it, through the good offices of Ottavio Costi, to Marquis Patrizi and it was still in that aristocratic family’s palazzo in Rome in 1939, when it was purchased for the Pinacoteca by the Associazione Amici di Brera. The depiction of the table with a carpet draped over it is a typical device of Caravaggio’s, found also in the first version of this subject which the artist had tackled earlier in a picture now in the National Gallery in London. Compared to the earlier version, this painting displays a greater intimacy and a plainer palette combined with a dramatic, almost theatrical treatment of light, underscoring the sacred nature of the moment.

PERSIAN CARPETS OF THE POLDI PEZZOLI MUSEUM

From June 23 to October 18, 2017 the Poldi Pezzoli Museum presents its carpet collection in the exhibition The Persian Carpets of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum.
Highlight of the exhibition is the extraordinary Safavid Persian carpet, of the 16th century, called Tiger Carpet, usually not on show.
The carpet, acquired in 1855 by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli at a private auction, was made about 450 years ago in central Iran; it is one of the few items in Italy created for the Safavid Court of Shah Tahmasp, who reigned from 1525 to 1576.
The Tiger Carpet is exhbited next to the famous Persian Hunting Carpet, dating to 1542-1543, at the Poldi Pezzoli Museum since 1923.
Both carpets can be better appreciated thanks to recent restoration.
The exhibition includes also a Herat Carpet and an Isfahan Carpet.
Due to their conservation, carpets are not always on show, so this exhibition is a great opportunity to appreciate the wonderful art of carpets.
The show is under the aegis of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

IO, LUCA VITONE

The physical and historical architecture places meet a personal dimension in the artistic career of Luca Vitone spanning 30 years
On the occasion of the 13th edition of the Contemporary Day dedicated to Italian art, the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan presents the exhibition Io, Luca Vitone that explores the intense wide production of the Italian artist born in 1964 in Genoa and based in Berlin.
Starting from the physical and historical architecture places, Vitone analyses a personal dimension built through a stratification of different languages connected to the identities and roots of the place itself, and challenges the conventions of faded, blurred memory. As a curious and untiring traveler, with a spirit lying halfway between an anarchist and a nomad, his work explores the ways in which the places built their identity through the cultural production: art, music, architecture, political associations and ethnic minority.
 
Curated by Luca Lo Pinto and Diego Sileo, the exhibition at PAC will cover the artistic career of Luca Vitone spanning 30 years, through a selection of his most significant projects rather than a juxtaposition of individual pieces. Following the architecture of the space, it will articulate in several rooms each one devoted to a specific body of work as they have been originally presented in their entirety. By using the entire exhibition as medium, Vitone will transform the physical space of the institution into a work functioning as a palimpsest to display other pieces, reproposing an early work contextualized in the exhibition space and a new version of his works made with dust. He will likewise employ the external space of PAC and the catalogue as a further extension of the exhibition.
The project will expand into the city with a selection of artist’s works installed at the fascinating cloisters of the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio – one of the oldest churches in Milan founded in the 4th century –, at the Museo Diocesano and at Museo del Novecento with the work Wide City (1998).
