NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
The Academy of Teatro alla Scala is unique: an educational institution with more than 1,200 students, closely interlaced with the artistic life of the Theatre, which allows young people from all over the world to learn the arts and the trades of show business, and lets La Scala pass down its tradition. In recent years, La Scala has invested in the Academy by doubling the number of singing pupils and multiplying the commitment of the Professors of the Orchestra as regards teaching. But most of all, every year, it presents a major new production featuring the orchestra and singers of the Academy led by a conductor and a director of the highest calibre, who will work with them for a year in a series of workshops. In 2016 Adam Fischer and Peter Stein arranged Die Zauberflöte with the young musicians; in 2017 the conductor Marc Albrecht and the actor, director, and - since 2014 - director of artistic programming of the Salzburg Festival, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, will be working on a new production of the enchanting Hänsel und Gretel by Humperdink.

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
Among the most important innovations of last Season was the creation of a Baroque ensemble within the La Scala orchestra under the supervision of the esteemed specialist Diego Fasolis. His test bench was Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, an oratorio in staged form which will be followed in 2017 by one of Handel’s great operas: Tamerlano, written for the Royal Academy of Music in 1724 and performed for the first time at the King’s Theatre that year. The opera brings to the stage the love competition between the king of the Tartars and his ally Andronico (played by Bejun Mehta and Franco Fagioli, two of the greatest countertenors of our day, both making their debut at La Scala) for Asteria (Maria Grazia Schiavo), the daughter of the prisoner, the Ottoman Emperor Bajazet (Plácido Domingo, who returns to the tenor register). The production marks the La Scala debut of one of the most important Italian directors, Davide Livermore, manager and artistic director of Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia di Valencia.

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCE
A bored young aristocrat, as a joke, spurns the maiden he later recognises as the true love of his life; but by then it is too late. After an absence of five years, John Cranko’s Onegin, a perfect example of modern “drama in dance”, returns to La Scala. Inspired by the novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin and reinterpreted with mastery and sensitivity by John Cranko, this great tale of ill-fated love is narrated through pas de deux with extraordinary expressive power, precision-sculpted characters and a splendid showcase of company numbers.
The score of the ballet, orchestrated by Cranko’s trusted collaborator Kurt-Heinz Stolze, is entirely based on Tchaikovsky’s music, but contains not a single note from his opera Eugene Onegin. The arrangement and the orchestration of the pieces were conceived in relation to their dramatic expressiveness, in line with the conception of the ballet as a complete theatrical performance, where the ability to reinvent a written story and narrate it purely in dance terms reveals the wonderful freedom in Cranko’s dramatic and choreographic development.
