History and modernity: the season’s core themes combined in an exciting double bill.
Marguerite and Armand. “In the final moments of her fatal illness, the Lady of the Camellias relives moments from her tragic existence.” Inspired by the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Frederick Ashton’s revered ballet celebrates the great school of English tradition and harks back to the unforgettable theatrical partnership of Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, who starred in the ballet to great acclaim at La Scala in 1966. Ashton choreographed the piece specifically for the two world-famous dancers, condensing the plot into a prologue and four scenes, with elegant sets, projections and costumes by renowned photographer Cecil Beaton.
Concerto DSCH. From Liszt we move to Dmitri Shostakovich, or DSCH, as the composer would abbreviate his name: letters that spell out four musical notes in German notation. This was the title chosen in 2008 by Alexei Ratmansky, one of today’s most talented and highly rated choreographers, for this New York City Ballet production. Bursting with energy, lyricism, virtuosity and profound musicality, this season sees the premiere of the work by the La Scala company. Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 2 in F Major, Op. 102 was penned for the 19th birthday of the composer’s son Maxim, and is a work full of joy and hope, inspired by the end of the Stalinist era. Ratmansky’s lively choreography captures the essence of the music. In the lyrical couple, the virtuoso trio of two men and one woman, and a delicate romantic intermezzo, the ballet harbours energy and surprise, attesting to the originality of its choreographer.

Performed on only two previous occasions at La Scala (1975 and 2000), the opera will be presented for the first time in a new production by English director Richard Jones, whom the public will remember for his extraordinary interpretation of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District.
John Graham-Hall stars as impetuous fisherman Peter Grimes in this mysterious tale set in a small fishing village on England’s east coast in the first half of the nineteenth century. The supporting cast includes John Graham-Hall, whose portrayal of Gustav von Aschenbach met with great acclaim in Death in Venice.

Eifman Ballet Theatre St. Petersburg Anna Karenina by Lev Tolstoj May: 9
Choreographie : Boris Eifman Music: Pëtr Il’ič ČajkovskijThe St.-Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theatre under the leadership of Boris Eifman, known to ballet-lovers all over the world as Eifman Ballet, was founded by Boris Eifman in 1977. At that time the company was named ‘Leningrad New Ballet’. The concept of ‘The New Ballet’ was innovative for that time; from the very beginning it was conceived as an experimental laboratory of one choreographer. The Company distinguished by the particular dance intellect, brilliant technique and gift for the transformation fascinates the western audience. Clive Barnеs writes in New York Post: “Now there’s no doubt that choreographer Boris Eifman is a wonderful theatrical magician…Perhaps the only thing one can still doubt is whether he is the last leading choreographer of the XX century or the first choreographer of the XXI century.” Anna Kisselgoff, one of the leading ballet critics in the USA, names Boris Eifman the leader among the contemporary choreographers: "The ballet world in search of a major choreographer need search no more. He is Boris Eifman."
At present the St. Petersburg state Academic ballet theater under the leadership of Boris Eifman is well-known among ballet lovers in Africa, Europe, Asia, the North and South America for the ballets ‘Tchaikovsky’ (1993), ‘Don Quixote, or Fantasies of a Madman’ (1994), ‘Red Giselle’ (1997), ‘Russian Hamlet’ (1999), ‘Anna Karenina’ (2005), ‘The Seagull’ (2007). Among the latest oeuvres are the new choreographic version of the ballet ‘Don Quixote, or Fantasies of a Madman’ (2009) and the premier of the ballet ‘Onegin’ (2009) based on the novel by Alexander Pushkin.
Having choreographed over forty five ballets Boris Eifman defines the genre in which he works as ‘psychological ballet.’ By using the language of dance he speaks sincerely with his audiences about the most complex and exciting aspects of human existence such as the quest for the meaning of life, the collision of the spiritual and physical in the private human world, and the cognition of the truth.
