It has been said of Hermès,The New York Times reported in 1940, “that it is perhaps the only establishment in the world in which one cannot buy a single article that is not in perfect taste.

Hermès: La Maison, Milan! The Jean-Michel Frank Reedition, to order at Hermès. By Appointment Only Store. For Hermès lovers finally the fornitures and the most refined textiles are in town.
Maison Hermes finally opened in Milan, its first standalone showroom in Via Pisoni 2, in the heart of the “Golden Quad”, entirely dedicated to the Maison collection. Francesca Carrobio, the CEO of Hermes Italy mentioned:
This is the first showroom of the Maison Line, and we had to choose Milan, the heart of design.
In a prominent position in front of renowned restaurant Nobu and the Armani Hotel Milano, the 150 square meter space is complete with two large windows displaying the latest Hermes designs. The new Milan store carries a full range of furniture including the Matières collection by Enzo Mari and Antonio  Citterio   and  the Sellier chair by Denis Montel and Eric Benqué.

As part of Maison, the company’s home collection,   Hermes  re-released certain iconic pieces that Jean-Michel Frank (1895 - 1941) designed in 1924 for the french luxury brand that, with its simple lines and exotic veneers, became an instant classic.

ABOUT JEAN-MICHEL FRANK. PROLIFIC GENIUS OF MODERNIST FRENCH DESIGN.

His minimalist approach and simple designs had brought Frank quite a fan following. In fact, he befriended and often designed homes for the likes of New York’s Rockefellers, Cole Porter, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, Man Ray, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cecil Beaton, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dalí, and Luis Buñuel. Yet, despite the obvious success, life was unkind to him.
Frank’s two brothers died in World War I and his parents too expired while he was young. When the Second World War broke out, Frank moved to Argentina. In 1941, Frank made a trip to New York. Sadly overcome by depression he committed suicide by throwing himself from the window of a Manhattan apartment building.
He was a first cousin of Otto Frank and, therefore, a first cousin, once removed, of the diarist Anne Frank

Now, the Frank and Hermès families are bringing the master’s creations back to life.

In this bid to revive the designer’s signature pieces, Hermès has spared no cost. Solid oak and calfskin leather upholstery have been used to recreate Frank’s “chair with a padded seat”. Also, on offer there are a three drawer dressing table which boasts of materials like parchment and ivory goatskin lining . The collection  includes plenty of 1930s’ French furniture – from club armchairs to long low tables; each piece, reissued exclusively for Hermès, is numbered, accompanied with a certificate of authenticity and signed “J.M. Frank, par Hermès.
Frank’s expression, says Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director and Hermès descendent, “is the very foundation of modern design vocabulary.” It is a fit tribute to a classic designer. As Robert Chavez, president and CEO of Hermès U.S.A., explains, the decision to revisit Frank’s work was based on customer demand. “The time was right,” he says, “to rekindle the relationship.

Previously, the company’s furniture was limited to Pippa, a small collection by the architect Rena Dumas, who designed Hermès stores and who was married to Jean-Louis Dumas, the chairman of Hermès from 1978 to 2006. Recently, Hermès has come out with an ultra-luxe update on its classic Pippa folding chair, finished in the world’s finest matte black crocodile skin.
