ROLLING STONE - 1000 covers. In a book the most beautiful covers of that world’s icon magazine for pop music |
 |
1967 was about to end and the world was on the verge of changing: war were being fought, revolutions breaking-out, mega concerts created a new type of culture and, hovering above all that roar, radios shouted the music of a new generation. A bit discreetly ROLLING STONE was being founded, the magazine thermometer of the global cultural temperature. "For four decades ROLLING STONE has been writing the chronicle of our times, keeping pop music as a leading thread –said Carlo Antonelli, editor of Rolling Stone in Italy, during the presentation inside the store of White Star Adventure -. The complete collection of ROLLING STONE covers since 1976 up to the legendary 1000th copy, issued in 2006, represents not just the evolution of a magazine, but a chronicle of our times.” For four decades, not another better and surer indicator of appearing on the cover of ROLLING STONE marked the arrival of a musician, an artist or personality. Practically every important rock musician or film star has appeared on one of the 1000 reproduced covers, together with politicians, comedians, comic strips characters, directors, pop singers and television actors, who have contributed to shape our times. "When I founded ROLLING STONE in Novembre 1967 – stated Jann S.Wenner, artistic director of Rolling Stone – its initial objective was to supply information on rock music with intelligence and respect. But even then we knew that the excitement our generation was stirring included something more than just simple music” and he adds, these events and personalities have been captured for the ROLLING STONE cover by some of the best photographers of our time”. A partial list includes Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Richard Avedon, Anton Corbijn, Albert Watson, Herb Ritts, David LaChapelle, Martin Schoeller, Hiro, Platon, Francesco Scavullo, Matt Mahurin and Matthew Rolston. Exactly one of these master photographers, Annie Leibovitz, states in the book “John Lennon was one of my first covers for ROLLING STONE (her first portrait by commission). At the time I was still going to school – I considered the photo for a cover as a mediocre image, of lesser importance. Photography for me did not mean just a portrait: anyone was capable of doing it. I was a fanatic of serous journalism: stuff for daily papers, capturing an instant in time, Cartier-Bresson”. The book, out last year in the United States to celebrate the thousand cover of Rolling Stones, is now available in the Italian version produced and distributed by White Star.
